Just a quick note on our weekend. Saturday was fun-packed. We both worked at the Habitat 5K run in Holland. This, I think, took the place of the Tulip Time 10K that I ran 15 years ago. Anyway, it was well attended thanks to a Zeeland High School PE teacher who had her kids muster smartly at the starting line...100 strong...to join the competition. There were another 200 or so folks, so it was a good race. We worked before and after and I am begining to meet some of Aleene's new friends.
We went to Saugatuck for lunch. We have been trying to get in Pumpernickle's for a month, but it is never open when we were looking for a place. They now have their hours posted and took our money (pricey) for a scant and not all that good meal. Aleene got the tuna salad...and while the tuna was good, the greens (which were the exotic blend) were marginal. When bagged salad gets old some of the leaves begin to break down and smell and taste bad, so you pick them out. Well, Aleene had to do the picking. Not what you would expect for nearly $7. I got the special which came out as the normal breakfast. I questioned the absence of the potatoes that were listed on the menu so they brought out a thimble full on a dinky little plate and mumbled something about punching the wrong key. In our manner, we did not complain...we just won't go back. Ida Red's is still the best breakfast-lunch place around; don't you think?
Saturday afternoon, with Miss Dog in tow, we walked the dunes at the SD State Park. It was beautiful. We took the long trail which, because we had the dog, means that you cannot connect easily with the shorter return trail since you can't take dogs on the beach. I know people take their dogs on the beach, but we don't. Anyway, we all three were bushed after our hour walk in the sand. Shortly thereafter, we went to the fiesta for supper...heard the music, saw the dancers and ate at Tamale Ray's. He has his cart at the Farmer's Market and I buy breakfast tacos from him or tamales, sometimes, and we know them...sort of. Anyhow that was fun. It was hard to believe we were in Holland in the midst of the Latino people. There were a few Anglos there, but certainly a minority. We enjoyed it.
We went for coffee at our new place on 17th street and then went home and flopped.
Sunday I preached 2x and we swooned in the afternoon and joined Sievert's for ice cream cake desert after their family Mother's Day event. Brent and Kara were there. Brent is working and Kara is through with school for the summer...she has one more year to get her RN. Had a nice chat with them. Kelly told a few prom stories...she broke up with her old beau and went to Fennville's Prom with someone...I forget the connection. She is a cutie.
John's parents were there and had been at church too, so it was a continuation of conversations...good time. Again, we came home and flopped.
I begin teaching on Wednesday night, so I am in the cram mode...this should be fun.
