I have been teaching this class, MGMT 431 since forever...the last week of August. We missed a week due to Labour Day and will miss another for Thanksgiving...so a 15 week class turns into a 17 week class. This is at Davenport Univeristy, in GR. I have been teaching at DU for 13 years. Previously I taught in the accelerated program so 5 weeks was it. In, out, you're done. This summer I taught an 6 week class at Cornerstone Univeristy (Portage) and I had a seven weeker at DU this fall as well. That is to say that I have been conditioned for short classes. This class is long. But you know what? I love it. I have ten students, and they are a mix which is not uncommon. There are six men and four women and they all have their own style of negotiations. Which again, is common. But I really have had to get these folks to think. They take tests ok, but they revert to what they know instead of what I have been teaching them. I tell them over and over....think like managers, not employees, that is what you are training to be. I gotta tell you, I love these folks. They come in, do their thing, have fun and learn and then chatter all about it for the next hour. We have about four weeks left...three classes and I will miss them. I think that is how teaching should be. I miss the Cornerstone group, but I really don't miss the 7 week DU group. They gave me good ratings, but there were some off the wall folks in that one.... Anyhow, I will not be teaching for at least three months, and I will miss it. I was born to teach...I guess I figured that out when I was in the Navy at Philadelphia. I figured out that is really what turned my crank, professionally. So, seven years at Campbell (with one year of teaching highschool sandwiched in, twelve years of teaching Middle School, and then a a five year dry spell before I hooked up at DU and now that is essentially all I am doing for money. Wow...teach till I drop. All told, I have taught something for 28 years. Anyway, this is what I like...negotiations and dispute resolution and I need to figure out a way to keep that going, especially with the type of students I am with right now....
