Black Crater fire

Black Crater fire

We ventured over the Cascades yesterday into the high desert...100 degree heat, the beauty and...the fire.

Central Oregon is about 150 miles from us; Sisters, Redmond, Bend are in a triangle at about 3500 feet on the DRY side of the mountains. Black crater is just outside Sisters by 10 or so miles. Lightening started this blaze on Sunday and by Thursday it was still going strong fed by high temps and 30 mph winds.

We got very close to it...close enough to have the sun go an errie orange under the plume. A tanker was overhead, flew into the smoke and came out up wind...quite a site. Normally this would be a very clear picture but there was fly ash everywhere in the air...even in the water glass of our outdoor lunch spot.

Thanks for stopping by...we have been keeping a close eye on the fire and feel for those in its path. Let's hope for the best.

I too live near this fire, and the threat it poses to human life, families and their homes is tragic. For that reason it is one of the highest priority fires in the State, but it is certainly not the largest fire.

Jason...
Thanks for checking in. Your point is well taken. Good luck to you. It looks like the weather will be better for containing it on Monday.

We were planning to take our horses to Sisters Cow camp this weekend. We have decided to stay on the other side of the mountains, but does anyone know if the fire has reached there? It's one of our favorite camps, I'd hate to see it burned, and I know there are houses near there, are those the neighborhoods being evacuated?

Those are the houses being evaced the last map I have has the fire line 1/4 awaya from sister's cow camp, my last map is about 18 hrs old so I'm not sure what has happened today, but will post if I get more info.
