Aleene and I were motoring north on US 131 yesterday headed for Gaylord. We were just south of the Manton exit when we came up behind a car stopped in the right lane with the woman standing near the trunk waving her arms. I slowed, pulled left and as I did she walked into the left lane...literally forcing me to the median.
"I have a damn flat," she shouted. "You better get your car off the road," I shot back...by this time Aleene had the window down. She complied and what transpired was an hour and a half of calling AAA, waiting, calling and waiting some more. She had no phone, but did have a current AAA membership so I did the calling. Oh yes, she stated she had no spare but near the end of our wait she discovered she had a "donut." Rather that try to undo what we worked over an hour to accomplish (get some help) I did not offer to change her tire.
I will reserve comments on the women...but she was in dire need of assistance and the local towing company was putting us off (through the AAA operator.) Finally, we had to go and "go" so I told the "customer advocate" to keep calling the towing person every 15 minutes until he showed up. We left the damsel sitting in her car smoking her cigarillos. She said she was on her way to visit someone "in the big house" as she explained. Not quite sure where that was.
We left her. Not sure that was the right thing. We were told help was on its way, so we had some confidence that she would be taken care of.
Jeff and Mary were waiting for us...ready to put some sizzlers on the grille when we drove in. They are both off to work, we have walked our usual route here and are getting ready to go to town to see the sights of Gaylord. They are off tomorrow and we have a full day planned for Sunday (two services) which includes seeing Mary's two youngest....we will be back in Holland on Sunday night.
